American Idol” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe told that there are more changes coming to Fox’s singing competition.

This season, the finalists will participate in a number of new challenges, including making a music video, promoting themselves as singers and creating an awards show-caliber performance that includes a band and dancers.

In addition, the producers have eliminated the round that cuts the contestants from 24 semi-finalists to 12 finalists. Instead, the show will just go straight to a top 12, but it’s unclear whether that group of singers will be chosen by the judges or viewers.

“I didn’t think [the top 24] were very good; I was bored with them by the time they got there,” Lythgoe told

The changes follow the news that theme weeks will now focus on decades rather than a specific artist.

Also as previously announced, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler have joined the judges’ panel following the departures of Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi. Interscope Geffen A&M Records chairman Jimmy Iovine also has come aboard as a mentor.

Producers also lowered the age requirements to try out for the show, with 15-year-olds now allowed to audition.

“Idol” returns Jan. 12.

Summary: For those big fan’s who adore Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler you will be excited to know it returns January 12th. Two hot star’s musically talented themselves.

Can you imagine if you were the one standing and performing in front them. It make’s for and interesting night of television if you ask me.

I absolutely love Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler personally I grew up either listening to their music or watching them on the big screen.

I actually stopped watching American Idol about 3 years ago. Just like anything we start off loving it and then over time we find ourselves growing out of it.

So much has changed as the years went on of course. Just like life and the season’s it always changing.

I been contemplating on watching it Jan. 12th just to see how the show rolls off with the these new celebrity judges.

I am sure the world is quite curious themselves. To see what it will be like without Simon who pretty much made that show interesting. Then of course Paula Abdul who always nit picked with Simon over the years.

How much longer do you think this show will last?

For those who are looking forward to auditions good luck and good singing!
